What is Beekeeping?

Beekeeping is the raising and caring for honeybees so that honey can be harvested from them.  Some beekeepers or bee farmers say, “I don’t keep bees.  The bees keep me.”  They know that if you take care of your honeybees properly they will take care of you by giving you honey to eat and to sell.  Another word for beekeeping is apiculture.

Honeybees were once wild animals.  Humans learned how to keep and raise (domesticate) them. After many years of raising honeybees and breeding the ones that make the most honey, the bees now make more honey than they need themselves. The beekeeper can take some of the honey without hurting the honeybee colony.
